A decision to ditch a question on biological sex from official surveys about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been branded ‘madness’, report Melanie Newman and Julie Bindel.
Two questionnaires administered by Public Health England previously sought to determine how patterns of STDs differ between men and women and between heterosexual and homosexual groups. But following consultation with transgender groups, respondents are no longer asked about the sex they were born but instead whether they ‘identify’ as male or female.

Public Health England administers two national surveys aimed at capturing data on sexual health. The HIV and AIDS Reporting System (HARS) collects data on all people accessing HIV Services. The Genitourinary Medicine Clinic Activity Dataset (GUMCAD) collects data on STI tests, diagnoses and services from all sexual health clinics in England.
