Tsunami Warning! Malcolm Clark on this Wednesday’s LGB Alliance panel discussion webinar on the worldwide wave of homophobia
TweetShare

Across the world we LGB people face a tsunami of homophobia. In the past few months, we have seen horrific murders in Iran, Latvia and South Africa, the criminalization of same-sex relationships in Uganda, and an ever harsher anti-gay climate in Indonesia, Hungary and Poland – to name just a few examples.

But what makes this period especially worrying is that with all the advances we made across the West, in countries like the UK, Australia and Germany LGB people are also under attack, from a more elusive enemy. Yep, gender identity ideology.

In this webinar Bev Jackson will be hearing from bold LGB activists who are trying to stem the tide and protect our rights from both this new generation of woke homophobes who believe themselves to be progressive as well as the Far-Right homophobes of yore.

In institutions as varied as schools, hospitals and at the heart of government, the ridiculous notion that human biology isn’t binary is not just being accepted – it’s being embraced. What’s worse, the very groups we LGB people set up to represent us have themselves been captured and now promote these unscientific ideas. Why does it matter? Because of course being lesbian, gay or bisexual means nothing if you undermine the immutability of biological sex.

In this webinar Bev Jackson will be hearing from bold LGB activists who are trying to stem the tide and protect our rights from both this new generation of woke homophobes who believe themselves to be progressive as well as the Far-Right homophobes of yore.

One key issue revolves around attempts to ban so-called “conversion therapy”. These bans are supported by well-meaning people remembering the horrors meted out to gay people in the past – horrors that have fortunately not been seen in the UK in a clinical context since the 1970s. So what is going on? Since the evidence shows most children who think they are trans would grow up gay, lesbian or bisexual without medical or surgical intervention, we oppose the inclusion of gender identity in any such legislative proposals. It’s crucial that we defend the profession of psychotherapy and the many distressed young people who need neutral, holistic care – not the one-size-fits-all “affirmation” approach that gender ideologues want to enforce.

But hey, there are plenty of reasons to be cheerful too. We’ll be discussing what we can learn from the fact proposals for gender self-ID were rejected in Germany, and also – for the time being – in Spain, thanks to an impressive effort by grassroots feminists and LGB people.

So get booking and grab a seat for our latest webinar “Tsunami Warning!” on Wednesday 26th May at 7pm. We are really looking forward to hearing from representatives from some of the many LGB groups that have been set up around the world: in Australia, Germany, India, and Serbia. Back here in the UK there’s more good news: more and more politicians are listening to our arguments and becoming aware of the precarious position of our rights as lesbians, gays and bisexuals. Tsunamis may be terrifying but we’ve positioned ourselves on the moral high ground and with your support we’re confident we can pick up the pieces and repair the damage when the wave recedes (as it always does).

The LGB Alliance webinar Tsunami Warning! is this Wednesday 26th May at 7pm.
